Curt Nimuendajú Photographic Collection of the Museu Nacional UFRJ

A futura Coleção Fotográfica Curt Nimuendajú do Museu Nacional UFRJ está sendo gestada sob o reconhecimento da memória como um direito inalienável e soberano dos povos originários. Mais do que meros registros do passado, esses fragmentos iconográficos constituem territórios em disputa, essenciais para que as comunidades detentoras, apoiadas em sua história, fortaleçam seus processos de territorialização e a expressão de suas identidades. Nossa proposta reconhece que o direito dessas comunidades sobre as fotografias se sobrepõe a qualquer outro interesse, tratando a memória como um elemento ativamente construído no presente, visando possibilidades auspiciosas de futuro para esses povos.

At the same time, the collection reaffirms the importance of Curt Nimuendajú’s work for the Social Sciences, Ethnology, and the field of Arts, consolidating the archive as a set of rare examples of historical iconography and documentary photography. The collection will constitute, therefore, an unequivocal manifestation of our brasilidade — a multifaceted concept that seeks to value alterities and the diverse identities that compose Brazilian culture.

The initiative is further based on the concept of shared custody (guarda solidária), a memory preservation strategy that seeks to break with conventional practices of colonialist collecting. Different from models that exclude the participation of the portrayed groups, shared custody proposes a closer relationship between the academic field, memory institutions, and holder communities, providing them with leadership in the participatory management of the safeguarded cultural assets.

By associating academic, artistic, and cultural relevance with the shared custody strategy, the project will seek to expand its reach and effectiveness. The goal is thus to sensitize different sectors of society to integrate collaborative support networks focused on cultural heritage. This includes the articulation of funding mechanisms to ensure that the captured resources sustain both the technical-administrative apparatus of the project and can be reverted as direct subsidies to the holder communities and their representatives.

The pillars of the collection's implementation will include:

  • Virtual Repatriation: The project will seek to reassemble the organicity of the records based on Nimuendajú’s trajectories to identify the descendants of the portrayed groups. This will allow for the establishment of direct dialogue with indigenous representatives, in order to provide the “virtual repatriation” of this memory.
  • Autoetnografias: A organização da coleção propõe a substituição da lógica exógena e ocidental de catalogação por descrições etnográficas construídas pelos próprios representantes das comunidades. A partir de suas categorias nativas de pensamento na interpretação e classificação das obras, assegura-se que as imagens reflitam suas próprias visões de mundo.
  • Political agency and sustainability: The collection instrumentalizes itself as a symbolic and political asset in the identity and territorial claims of the holder communities. The initial planning is supported by funding via the Rouanet Law, through the project “AÇÕES DE PRESERVAÇÃO DIGITAL: O olhar de Curt Nimuendajú sobre os povos originários do Brasil” (PRONAC: 249597). The implementation of the collection will allow for the recurring prospection of new resources aimed not only at the protection of this photographic set, but at future actions that support the sustainability of these groups through the valorization of their cultural assets.
  • Memória como manifestação da brasilidade: Embora priorize o direito originário, a coleção também será oferecida à sociedade como uma expressão de brasilidade, valorizando as alteridades que formam a identidade cultural do país e servindo como um recorte raro da fotografia documental para as artes e as ciências.

In this way, the Curt Nimuendajú Photographic Collection of the Museu Nacional/UFRJ aims to be not only an institutional repository, but a dynamic instrument of political agency focused on the visibility of the ways of life and knowledge of the original communities.
